Moving into a new home should be an exciting time instead of one that’s filled with stress and challenges. Planning ahead as much as possible can help keep the excitement in the air whether you’re packing boxes or getting the rooms in your new home decorated. There are a few things that you can do ahead of time to prepare for settling into your new home so that everyone is comfortable.

Gather The Essentials
Let everyone in your family pack a small bag that contains the essential items for at least two days. These are items that won’t be packed in boxes or totes. Some of the things that can be included are clothes, pajamas, toiletries, and disposable items for eating until you’re able to unpack dishes and cooking utensils. The bags should also include chargers, medications, and possibly a few toys for younger children. Keep food for pets separate from moving boxes as well.

Beds
As you’re packing, label the boxes with the contents that are inside each one. When you get into your new home, set up the beds first before getting the other details in order. You’ll easily be able to find the sheets and blankets for the beds since you labeled your boxes before moving. Setting up the beds will give everyone a comfortable place to rest after a long day of moving instead of sleeping on the floor or a couch.

Smaller Items
There will likely be bolts, screws, and other small items that could get lost when you’re moving. These items should be kept in a separate bag or in a small box so that they don’t get lost. You can wrap cords using colored tape, labeling the tape so that you know which item it goes with, such as a television or a computer. Another option would be to put bolts and smaller items in a bag that you then put inside a drawer or compartment of the item that they are from so that they don’t get lost.

Moving Clothes
Reduce the hassle of unpacking all of your clothes by keeping as many as you can in the drawers of dressers. All you’ll have to do is place the dressers where you want them in your new home. Items from your closet can be kept in hangers and gently placed in boxes as you take them off the rack so that you can put them in the new closets.
